We booked our stay at Umaid Bhawan Palace through American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR), and the experience was nothing short of magical. The complimentary upgrade to a stunning suite, seamless service, and included breakfast made us feel like true royalty from the very first moment. One of our absolute highlights was enjoying breakfast on the patio of the restaurant—al fresco, surrounded by blooming bougainvillea, manicured lawns, and the golden sandstone glow of the palace in the morning light. It set the perfect tone for our stay.

A Palace Built with Heart and Purpose
Umaid Bhawan Palace has one of the most inspiring origin stories in the world of luxury hospitality. In the late 1920s, Rajasthan faced a severe drought and famine. Maharaja Umaid Singh decided to create this grand new residence on Chittar Hill not just for his family, but as a vital source of employment for thousands of struggling locals. Construction began in 1929 and continued deliberately until 1943, giving work to artisans and farmers for over a decade.
British architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester blended Indo-Saracenic, Art Deco, and traditional Rajput styles using local golden-yellow sandstone, Makrana marble, and Burmese teak. The result? A 103-foot central dome and one of the largest private residences ever built—still standing as a breathtaking symbol of compassion, craftsmanship, and royal legacy.
A Living Royal Home
What truly sets Umaid Bhawan apart is that it remains a working royal palace. One wing is still home to the current head of the Jodhpur royal family, Maharaja Gaj Singh II. Another section operates as the Taj Umaid Bhawan Palace hotel (71 exquisite rooms and suites), while the third houses a fascinating museum filled with vintage cars, family portraits, weapons, and artifacts from the royal shikar era. As guests, we had full access to the museum and felt immersed in living history rather than visiting a museum.
Our Suite Upgrade and Daily Luxury
The FHR upgrade delivered a beautifully appointed suite with soaring ceilings, original Art Deco details, plush king beds, elegant furnishings, and butler service. The views across the Baradari Lawns toward the Blue City and Mehrangarh Fort were simply mesmerizing—sunrises and sunsets here feel like they were made for this exact spot.
Breakfast on the Patio

We headed to the restaurant’s patio for breakfast, and it was unforgettable. Freshly squeezed juices, regional Rajasthani specialties, perfectly cooked eggs, flaky pastries, fragrant teas, and fruits—all enjoyed outdoors with sweeping garden views. The complimentary FHR benefit made it even more indulgent, turning a simple meal into a royal ritual.
World-Class Amenities and Things to Do
Umaid Bhawan offers endless ways to unwind and explore on-site:
- Dining: Risala (fine-dining Continental and Indian), Pillars (multinational cuisine with garden views), Trophy Bar for cocktails and light bites.
- Wellness: The acclaimed Jiva Spa offers authentic Ayurvedic treatments, yoga sessions, steam rooms, and saunas.
- Pools & Fitness: Outdoor pool, indoor heated pool (the legendary subterranean Zodiac Pool), fitness center, and tennis courts.
- Gardens & Grounds: Stroll the vast Baradari Lawns, bougainvillea gardens, shaded colonnades, and peaceful courtyards.
- Experiences: Palace museum tours, afternoon high tea with live music, champagne breakfasts in the gardens, cultural evenings, and more.
Many guests also arrange private tours of Mehrangarh Fort or the Blue City, but we found ourselves perfectly content never leaving the palace grounds.

In the Footsteps of Royalty and Celebrities
Over the decades, Umaid Bhawan has hosted kings, queens, dignitaries, and modern icons. The most famous recent event was Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s spectacular 2018 wedding, which brought global attention to the palace. Walking the same corridors and courtyards where such legendary celebrations have taken place adds another layer of magic.
Accolades That Speak for Themselves
The palace continues to collect top honors year after year:
- Rajasthan’s Leading Palace Hotel 2024 – World Travel Awards
- Hotel of the Year 2024 – Gallivanter’s Guide
- Consistently ranked among the world’s best heritage hotels by Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, and Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice
